A group of researchers working on a new study suggest that a compound present in magic mushrooms can help people combat conditions like depression and anxiety. According to the new study published on Tuesday in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, only a single dose of the compound called psilocybin is beneficial for improving the mental well-being of the users.
There exist more than 200 different species of mushrooms that produce the naturally occurring psychedelic compound which can change into an active drug by undergoing a digestive process. Some common types of psilocybin mushrooms are Inocybe, Panaeolus, Pholiotina, Pluteus, and Psilocybe, with the last one being the most effective of them all.
The study is a continuation of tests conducted back in 2016 in which the participants were either administered with a singular dose of the compound or given a dose of niacin, another organic compound, and an essential human nutrient. The research team studied a total of 29 cancer patients who took part in the research, gauging them for their cancer-related anxiety and depression levels. The doses were continued for a period of seven weeks after which they were given the opposite compound.
The new follow-up study shows that after a span of more than six months, about 80% of the participants who were given the compound were found to have reduced levels of anxiety, demoralization, depression, hopelessness, and anxiety caused by thoughts of death. The results of the long-term study showed that the effects persisted for a very long time as confirmed by 15 of the participants from the 2016 trial when they were reassessed after 3.2 and 4.5 years.
According to a post published by CNN, lead author of the study Gabby Agin-Liebes, said that “These results may shed light on how the positive effects of a single dose of psilocybin persist for so long. The drug seems to facilitate a deep, meaningful experience that stays with a person and can fundamentally change his or her mindset and outlook.” Agin-Liebes has also headed the original study from four years back, the John Hopkins Trial.
